Open the pod bay doors, HAL

Folketymologier är vad man kallar felaktiga förklaringar av ords ursprung. Intressant nog gäller många av de mest spridda tämligen moderna och väldokumenterade ordbildningar. Ett extremt exempel är pod(d), som i pod(d)cast. Det går tillbaka på Apples mp3-spelare (om nu någon använder det begreppet längre) iPod som lanserades 2001. Namnet syftade på filmen 2001: A Space Odyssey. Eftersom det enda sammanhanget där en pod nämns är i den kusliga konversationen mellan Dave och HAL 9000 så lät det lite underligt, avgjort värt att dubbelkolla:

While describing the player, Jobs constantly referred to Apple's digital hub strategy: The Mac is a hub, or central connection point, for a host of gadgets. This prompted [Vinnie] Chieco to start thinking about hubs: objects that other things connect to. 

The ultimate hub, Chieco figured, would be a spaceship. You could leave the spaceship in a smaller vessel, a pod, but you'd have to return to the mother ship to refuel and get food. Then Chieco was shown a prototype iPod, with its stark white plastic front. 

"As soon as I saw the white iPod, I thought 2001," said Chieco. "Open the pod bay door, Hal!" 

Then it was just a matter of adding the "i" prefix, as in "iMac."

iPod gjorde succé och blev snabbt ett inarbetat begrepp för digitalt (bärbart) ljud. Och så småningom skapades en nybildning av pod och broadcast, och det utan större eftertanke, om ordsnidarens berättelse stämmer:

I was writing about this new phenomenon of automatically downloaded audio programs in about 2004. And it was one of those last minute articles that I was writing very very close to the press deadline. And I emailed it over, with about 10 minutes to go before the presses ran. I got an email back very very quickly from the sub editor saying, "Brilliant piece, but it's about 20 words short. Can you just pad it out a little bit?" And so I reread the piece that I had written in and realized that the phenomenon that I was talking about didn't have a name. So I made up this sentence which said something like "But what do we call this new phenomenon?" And then I made up some words and one was audio blogging, and then there was gorilla media, and the last one was podcasting. And I sent that off and everything was fine. And then, six or seven months later, I got an email from the Oxford English Dictionary saying, "Hey! This 'podcasting' word. Where did you get that? Because you're the earliest citation that we can find." And I said basically, I made it up.

Betydligt senare fick folk för sig att pod borde vara en förkortning. (Förkortningar är påfallande populära bland folketymologier.) Förslaget Program On Demand kanske skapats med tanke på med den vedertagna förkortningen Print On Demand. Men skapad i efterhand är just vad den är. Podden man lyssnar på kommer från pod "fröskida" via en rymdfilm och en musikspelare; se där en förklaring som ingen hade kunnat hitta på.
