In the bosom of one of those spacious coves which indent the eastern shore of the Hudson, at that broad expansion of the river denominated by the ancient Dutch navigators the Tappan Zee, and where they always prudently shortened sail, and implored the protection of St. Nicholas when they crossed, there lies a small market-town or rural port, which by some is called Greensburgh, but which is more generally and properly known by the name of Tarry Town.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow är en av de riktigt klassiska inhemska amerikanska berättelserna. Den har getts ut otaliga gånger, dramatiserats och filmats, och det är givetvis därifrån som tv-serien Sleepy Hollow fått sitt namn.

Platsen finns i verkligheten. Några mil norr om New York, på Hudson-flodens östra strand, hittar man den, strax norr om Tarrytown ... Men bara sedan några år tillbaka.

Not far from this village, perhaps about two miles, there is a little valley, or rather lap of land, among high hills, which is one of the quietest places in the whole world. [...] From the listless repose of the place, and the peculiar character of its inhabitants, who are descendants from the original Dutch settlers, this sequestered glen has long been known by the name of Sleepy Hollow, and its rustic lads are called the Sleepy Hollow Boys throughout all the neighboring country. A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land, and to pervade the very atmosphere.

Men från slutet av 1800-talet hette orten North Tarrytown. Den måtte haft karaktär av bruksort, då den överlägset största arbetsgivaren hette General Motors. Runt dem och den stora bilfabriken (som ursprungligen byggdes 1896 av ångbilsföretaget Stanley Steam Car Corporation) cirkulerade livet. Det tog slut sommaren 1996 då fabriken, efter en lång tids kräftgång, stängde. Framtiden såg inte ljus ut för North Tarrytown. Men tänk om man inte ville vara North Tarrytown längre?

Tanken hade luftats tidigare: Om man skulle byta namn från det relativt intetsägande North Tarrytown till det berömda Sleepy Hollow? I den akuta krisen bestämde man sig för att pröva saken på allvar. Invånarna fick rösta om namnbytet. Argumenten för var många, men även emot; vad är väl ett namn? Och inte minst skulle det ju bli så dyrt.

Many natives belittled the change in the 122-year-old name North Tarrytown as an empty, pretentious gesture that would do little to restore the glory days of the village's thriving General Motors plant, which closed earlier this year. They also said the name change would cost tens of thousands of dollars in repainted road signs, fire trucks and police cars.

The name change transformed the industrial town into a spooky destination and a beautiful fall attraction for New Yorkers. Irving's classic story looms over the entire village, and, with a nudge from the FOX drama of the same name, tourism has further picked up in the past couple years.

Borgmästaren (typ) uppskattar att orten med ca 10 000 invånare under högsäsong, som här utgör Halloween, får runt 100 000 besökare. Här finns spökhotell, krogar som serverar Ichabod Ale och utryckningsfordon med Ichabod och den huvudlöse påmålade ... Och inte minst kyrkogården. Utöver flera andra berömdheter som Elizabeth Arden, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler och William Rockefeller vilar här självaste Washington Irving. Vid Halloween är den kyrkogården en av de halloweenigaste platser man kan tänka sig. Klart att det drar folk.
