Den olympiska "freden"

Den olympiska freden är ett historiskt faktum; så kallad εκεχειρίας ekecheiria iakttogs även under antikens spel. Men den var inte en allmän vapenvila.

Poängen var att krig inte fick störa spelen. Om du skulle till Olympia, som deltagare, funktionär eller så bara publik, så skulle du få fri lejd genom krigszoner. Inte så lite, men heller inte mer. Krigen i sig upphörde inte bara för att de olympiska spelen var igång.

Contrary to what many have thought, especially some modern Olympic officials, the Greeks did not cease their wars against one another during the Games or the Olympic truce. Rather, the truce, besides protecting Olympia from invasion, forbade any individual or government to interfere with anyone traveling to and from the Olympics.
