Good enough for Jesus

"If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for me."

Denna skarpa iakttagelse har tillskrivits flera personer. Den som oftast nämns verkar vara en Miriam A. Ferguson, guvernör för Texas 1925-27 och 1933-35, därtill den första kvinnan på posten. Eftersom hon verkar ha varit bildad och intelligent - eller, åtminstone inte obildad och stendum - så förefaller det mindre troligt, åtminstone så länge man förutsätter att det sades på allvar.

Men jämför med nedanstående historia - sann eller inte. En präst berättar om en nyöversättning, och om dess medelst textkritik överlägsna kvalitéer jämfört med 1611 års klassiska översättning:

He illustrated the tenacity with which people cling to the old Bible by telling a story about an agent of a Bible society who was trying to collect money in a country church for a new translation of the Bible. The agent asked an old farmer in the congregation to contribute. "What's the matter with the good old King James version?" the farmer replied. "That was good enough for St. Paul, and it's good enough for me."
